A flatwoven 'soumak' technique cover, southern Caucasus, late 19th century 260 x 210 cm

A flatwoven 'soumak' technique cover, southern Caucasus, late 19th century 260 x 210 cm This beautiful cover or hanging belongs to a well-documented group with rows of large, stylised dragon motifs. Mythical reptilean creatures play a strong role in Caucasian folk traditions and appear in the designs of classical Caucasian carpets as well as in folk embroideries. The painstaking technique of extra-weft wrapping the entire surface of the weaving has resulted in a supple but firm texture that complements its bold design and rich colour palette.
