1798 S-155 R3 Style I Hair, Reverse of 1796, MS63 Brown PCGS. Frosty bluish steel and olive with a small arc of golden tan toning on the left edge of both sides. A small spot of similar golden toning is located on the upper edge of the hair ribbon and another in the hair below. Peeps of mint color remain visible on the right side of the reverse, particularly at AMER. Nicely struck with just a few trivial contact marks including a light scratch left of the hair ribbon, a collection of very tiny ticks behind the head, and minor marks on the cheek and chin. LDS, Breen state VI, with several fine die cracks on the obverse. Graded MS60 net AU50 and CC#4 in the Noyes census, his photo #62263. This cataloger's EAC grade is AU58. A wonderful example of the popular 1798 Reverse of 1796 type. The attribution and Husak Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. Following early membership at local coin clubs in his hometown, Findlay, Ohio, Borckardt and his father began attending coin shows with bourse tables in the early 1970s. Along the way, he has handled 80 of the 100 greatest U.S. coins as recorded in the book by Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth. He is the recipient of the Clemy Award from the Numismatic Literary Guild, the Herbert Silberman Award from Early American Coppers, and was named the American Numismatic Association's Numismatist of the Year for 2020.
