Great Britain Elizabeth I (1558-1603) Shilling ND (1560-1561) UNC
Great Britain
Elizabeth I (1558-1603) Shilling ND (1560-1561) UNC Details (Cleaned) NGC, Tower mint, Cross Crosslet mm, Second Issue, S-2555, N-1985. 5.90gm. By no means a coin that can be said to come in uncirculated condition with any regularity, the high incidence of the type occurring from metal detecting finds leading many survivors to come down to us bent, lightly corroded, and with shovel marks, not to mention frequent edge chipping and subsequent cleaning. That being said, the detail on this piece is simply astonishing, Elizabeth's usually weak portrait picked out in full detail, mint luster still detectable over what is an essentially full flan. Though admittedly lightly cleaned, this proves of little visual impact on the whole, and appears to have taken place long ago. For comparison, not a single straight-graded Mint State example has been certified.
