Large Cents 1796 S-108 R4 Draped Bust, Reverse of 1794, MS62 Brown

Large Cents
1796 S-108 R4 Draped Bust, Reverse of 1794, MS62 Brown PCGS. Frosty medium steel brown and chocolate with lustrous lighter steel brown faded down from mint color in protected areas on the reverse. The surfaces are satiny and there is no friction on the highpoints. Faint specks of darker toning (not carbon) are scattered over the obverse, mostly in the field behind the portrait, but they are not too distracting and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. The only notable marks are a hairline scratch on the bust and a dull nick under the E in ONE. Sharply struck LDS, Breen state V, with all the die cracks described by Breen. The fields are satiny and smooth on both sides but the portrait and LIBERTY are covered with uniform very fine die rust (microscopic lumps on the coin), a characteristic of the latest die state mentioned by Breen. An interesting die state that must be seen to be fully appreciated. Graded MS60 net AU50 and CC#2 behind the ANS example in the Noyes census, his photo #33738. Bland says AU55 and tied for CC#1 with the ANS coin. This cataloger's EAC grade is MS60 net AU55. The attribution is noted on the PCGS Gold Shield label. PCGS population 1; none finer. 35795.62/33041119.
