PRIVATE COLLECTION OF HER ROYAL HIGHNESS PRINCESS MARIE-GABRIELLE DE SAVOIE
Following the success of the book sale of part of the princely and royal collection of the Kingdom of Italy last June, our house is delighted to unveil, in its December 2023 sale, a fine selection of rare objects and works from the personal collection of Her Royal Highness Princess Marie-Gabrielle of Savoy.Carefully selected from the Princess's private library, the thirteen works offered on the following pages (lots 2 to 14) cover a wide range of subjects: numismatics, travel, history, geography, costumes and decorations, jewelry... The brilliance of the gilded and embellished bindings underlines the importance and prestige of the House of Savoy throughout history. Lots 8 and 9, from the library of Prince Eugène de Savoie (1663-1736), reflect the influence of the Savoie-Carignan branch. Other ancestors leave their gilded imprint on the plates of books 2, 13 and 14: King Victor-Amédée III of Sardinia (1726-1796) and his mother Anne-Marie d'Orléans (1669-1728), wife of Victor-Amédée II, Duke of Savoy and King of Sardinia.Medals and objets d'art from the same collection reflect the House of Savoy's relationship with history in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Japanese objects (lots 17 to 19) refer to the complete reopening of Japan to the West during the Meiji era (1868-1912), and are worthy of the finest pieces to be found at European World Fairs at the time, coming from the personal collection of King Victor-Emmanuel III and testifying to his close relations with Japan. As for the urn vase (lot 20) commissioned by Louis-Philippe I in 1836 for the Versailles and Tuileries collections, it illustrates the good relations between the French and Belgian constitutional monarchies at the time.13 numismatic lots, also belonging to Princess Marie-Gabrielle de Savoie, are on sale on OnLine Only until December 4 at 12 noon.
