1991**** Very Good for Red, *** Good for White.

A vintage which has been completely overlooked at first, coming after the great 1990’s this is not surprise. Early in spring there was a severe frost which seriously brought down the potential volume. Flowering was long and took place in cool conditions. Summer was hot and dry, a fierce local storm on 22 August hailed down on the vineyards of Morey to Vosne doing serious damage. August finished with fine sunny weather which continued into September leading up to the harvest.

Good quality whites of elegance and pure fruit. The reds were more uneven, here and there some tight to much extracted wines but overall a successful vintage which gave wines of strength and depth which will go on and still present aging potential.

Tasting note: Medium intense red colour with orange reflections. A fine and racy nose typical of La Romanée. Refined elegant taste. BPF.

1992*** Good for Red, ***** Outstanding for White.

A great white wine vintage, lovely and attractive.

After a mild winter and start of spring the flowering started early, uneven weather throughout May caused delays and irregular fruit setting which was desirable to bring down the size of a potentially huge crop. August was hot and sunny bringing the grapes into excellent ripened state for an early harvest on 12 September. Most of the crop was in before the rain arrived on 22nd September.

Contrary to 1991 the berries were big with a lot of juice. Gorgeous fresh and lively wines. The whites of the best grand cru terroirs continue to offer a lot of pleasure.

Tasting note: Beautiful deep colour. Subtle nose of faded rose, cinnamon, mocha and intense notes of nutmeg and amber. Mouth very harmonious, all delicacy. Good structure for a 1992. BPF.

1995**** Very Good for Red & White.

Small crop of high quality for long aging. As in 1985 the acidity in the white wines is hidden behind the ripe fruit.

Early frost and cool June weather reduced the size of the 1995 crop severely. Though July and August were fine dry and warm when September arrived cooler terms arrived bringing showers and overcast. Fortunately the rains were more spread and did not do the damage as in 1994. Harvest took place in cooler though dry weather. Careful selection was essential. The 1995 wines showed great potential in barrel, the silky tannins and fine acidity gives the wines a soft mouthfeel.

Very attractive white wines with creamy structure balanced by fine-tuned acidity.

Tasting note: Beautiful dark garnet color, tiled reflections. Nose of cooked strawberry, figs and raisins. Intense start of taste, well-structured with beautiful balance. Nice bottle, fresh. BPF.

1996***** Outstanding for Red & White

Tough wines with an acidic backbone which needed time to show its charm. Amazingly great, complete whites of length and balance.

Exceptional vintage of long distance runners. The initial tight appearance didn’t make this an easy vintage to understand.

The dry end of winter continued into April with low temperatures going on until end of May when finally warmer weather arrived. Fortunately there were some good rainy periods during that month bringing the water levels in the ground back up so the vines would be prepared for the hot and dry summer which was to arrive. September was cold and dry ensuring good sugar levels and acidity in the grapes.

Recorked November 2015.

Tasting notes: Good intensity, coppery highlights but still fresh color. Nose of red fruits cooked that evolves on notes of grilled coffee, black spines. Good attack on the palate served by a good acidity but not too marked for a 1996, silky tannins. A well balanced 1996. BPF.

1999***** Outstanding for Red, **** Very Good for White.

Vintage offering the rare combination of sufficient quantity and high quality. The late Henri Jayer compared this vintage to the 1934.

A mild winter continued into a warm even weather in May, this got the flowering of the vines going at a steady pace. Without any major hail or frost damage it was clear from the start that the potential volume of the 1999 crop would be high. June and first half of July were fairly cool then hot and dry weather arrived which caused a few drought problems later on in the summer. Those who green harvested earlier now had more healthy grapes on the vine. Harvest started on 15 September.

The white 1999’s are rich and concentrated wines with buttery tones. Especially the terroirs with higher natural acidity like Corton-Charlemagne made the best wines.

An exceptional vintage for Pinot Noir offering deep colors, rich ripe black fruit of a unique purity all well balanced. A vintage seek out for still.

Tasting note: Very beautiful purple robe, fresh, tiled reflections. Nose deep, very fresh, spicy, smoky, truffled, cherry cream and tobacco. Mouth very dense, fresh, licorice stick. BPF.

2000*** Good for Red & White.

The previous year it was Burgundy which had the high hand, in 2000 Bordeaux fared better.

Never the less this is an attractive vintage of fruit forward charming wines.

The mild winter got the vegetation started quite early on, resulting in a precautious harvest. After an irregular July warm weather arrived early August. On 12 September as fierce storm brought huge amounts of rain which floated parts of the Southern Cote de Beaune. Fortunately the skins were thick and could withstand this wet spell. When dry and sunny weather returned the harvest started.

The Cote de Beaune whites were picked around the same time as the Cote de Nuits reds, so later on which was to the benefit. Wines of structure and precision. The reds are finely styled and elegant, making for lovely drinking in the coming years.

Tasting note: Beautiful garnet color, purple to tile reflections. Nose of small red and black fruits, minty aroma, eucalyptus. Elegant and fragrant mouth. BPF.
