A very rare sealed 'Onion / Bladder' transitional wine bottle, dated 1729 Of olive-green tint, the slightly bulbous body with flattened sides and elegantly sloping shoulders, the long tapering neck with an applied string rim, the seal applied to the shoulder of the narrow face and inscribed 'J/ Stenkley/ 1729' in script, with a deep basal 'kick-up', 20.9cm high Footnotes: Provenance Bonhams, 1 May 2013, lot 86 A C Hubbard Jr Collection The name on the seal is unusual and likely relates to Joseph Stenkley, son of John Stenkley, who was christened in May 1669 at St Benedict's Church, Cambridge. This seal is unrecorded by David Burton in his catalogue, Antique Sealed Bottles (2015), but a bottle of the same form with a seal also dated 1729 is illustrated by Burton on p.630.
